Product Properties of the Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15

Price & Availability

You have a variety of choices when purchasing the Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15. It is available in both AMD and Intel versions.

The cheapest AMD model, with a Ryzen 3 processor, is priced at about $500-550. The Ryzen 5 or 7 with additional enhancements is available for $600 or $700-800. In either case, these computers remain economical. Laptop versions for AMD and Intel start at $579 and $629, respectively, though discount coupons usually lower those prices.

There is also a $630 (or $430 on sale) model of the S340 with the same specifications as this version. However, it includes a dual-core Intel Core i3 processor rather than a quad-core CPU. So you could alternatively spend a little extra money (beginning at $830, or $550 on sale) to get an S340-15 with an IPS panel or choose a model with a modern 10th-generation Ice Lake Core i5 processor.

The IdeaPad S340-direct 15’s rivals include other affordable 15.6-inch multimedia laptops, including the Asus VivoBook S15, HP Pavilion 15, Acer Aspire series, and Dell Inspiron 15.

Opening the lid reveals a gorgeous display with thin bezels. Compared to the Dell Inspiron 15, the Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15 feels more streamlined and refined.

Even though the S340-15 features a full-HD (1920*1080) display rather than the lesser 1366*768 screen found on many sub-$500 laptops, the S340-15’s maximum screen brightness is measured to be just adequate for comfortable indoor viewing. The Lenovo screen has a 15.6-inch anti-reflective display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and an LED backlight.

The Lenovo Ideapad S340-15 uses an IPS panel with Full HD resolution. A diagonal of 15.6″ results in a PPI value of 141, so the content is displayed beautifully sharp. Furthermore, due to the surface, there are no reflection issues, and because of the IPS panel, you also benefit from wide viewing angles.

The color quality of Lenovo Ideapad S340-15 is also sufficient for everyday office use; however, projects requiring more color fidelity should be done on another laptop as the color space coverage is not exceptionally high compared with most laptops designed for office use.

The display is neither exceptionally bright nor too dark. The differences in the illumination of the individual display areas are pretty small and unnoticeable in everyday use. It shows holiday pictures and movies with pale colors; at least with 1920×1080 pixels, they are nice and sharp. In addition, the image change takes less than twelve milliseconds. There are no ugly streaks in fast action scenes in films. Nevertheless, with the rather pale display, the screen lacks brilliance.

Featuring a quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and integrated graphics, the S340-15 is designed for productivity and work. In other words, it’s a laptop that you can use to carry out office chores at a leisurely pace while occasionally giving it a challenge when multi-core power is required.

However, the Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15 contains a dedicated graphics card to increase the graphical power. In addition, the laptop’s dedicated GPU, NVIDIA GeForce MX230, and the MX250 video card boost the graphics processing power to enjoy more precise and smoother graphics.

Two downward-firing speakers are installed on either side of the base panel of the IdeaPad S340-15, and the sound they produce is reasonably loud but dull and uninteresting. Although the S340-15’s audio quality isn’t superb, the Dolby Audio software widens the audio soundstage of the S340-15. The Dolby Audio app lets you choose between Movie, Game, Voice, and Music profiles. In addition, it provides a virtual surround sound effect so that even when played back through only the front speakers, you can still enjoy a wide-ranging surround sound experience. Furthermore, the Dolby Audio tuning on the Lenovo Ideapad S340 (15) results in high-quality audio. Its low, mid, and high frequencies don’t deviate.

The sound is satisfactory for a laptop. As with all laptops, the IdeaPad S340-15’s sound is also height-oriented, with a good relationship between the mid and high frequencies. Furthermore, when you turn the volume up, the sound does not become shrill and stays clear, which is a plus. You are set for using Skype, listening to music, or watching movies at half-volume. This setting is also ideal for brief conference calls and casual YouTube viewing. A decent set of headphones is the best option if you’re looking for additional high-quality audio.

Design and Processing

The design is simple and without frills. The IdeaPad S340-15 is dark blue, with a contrasting keyboard in dark gray. Lenovo largely dispenses with any decorative elements in this model. There is no logo on the display lid or front, only a small gray Lenovo logo on the front. Since many users prefer simple laptops, they will probably appreciate this decision by Lenovo. The touchpad is large and located in front of the keyboard. Because the keyboard has a full number pad, the letter keys are shifted slightly to the left.

The touchpad of the IdeaPad S340-15 is a precision unit that Windows 10 acknowledges, in contrast to the touchpad on the less expensive IdeaPad S145. The pointer moves naturally and linearly. Additionally, it makes it so multi-finger taps & swipes work instantaneously. All touchpad settings can be modified in Windows Settings without installing a third-party driver or program. If you push within the touchpad’s lower half part, the two click keys underneath its smudge-free, smooth surface easily.

The laptop can be opened nearly 180 degrees thanks to wide hinges; however, because they are tight, it is extremely difficult to open the laptop with just one hand.

The S340-15’s backlit keyboard has a nice tactile bump, a springy return, and enough travel (the amount the keys move when pressed) to keep them from feeling too shallow. As a result, it is comfortable and smooth to the touch. Additionally, you have dedicated media keys above the numeric keypad and Alt-enabled hotkeys for turning off the microphone and webcam. The keyboard keys are slightly rounded at the bottom, which is unusual, but you can type the text quite comfortably with the keys. However, be careful when pressing the enter key: Lenovo Touchscreen AMD Ryzen has latched the key with the apostrophe and the hash mark tightly here. Therefore, often when you press the Enter key, multiple crosses appear on the screen unintentionally.

The small and nearly invisible power button is located between the display and the keyboard at the top right. It has a small LED showing you if the device is running or the display is off.

Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15’s casing is mostly plastic. The bottom is quite torsion-resistant, while the top by the keyboard is relatively thin. As a result, it yields very quickly when you type with a bit of pressure. It’s not critical, but you may initially notice an irritating feeling. On the other side, the display lid is made of aluminum and feels valuable. The disadvantage of aluminum is it magically attracts fingerprints.

A nice addition to the IdeaPad S340-15’s 720p webcam is that it has a physical privacy shutter. Therefore, you won’t need to cover the webcam lens with tape to give yourself any extra security measures. This Lenovo is the least expensive laptop with a privacy shutter like this. The feature was previously only accessible on more expensive ThinkPad models.

The IdeaPad S340-15 is designed for office use, and here, it does all its tasks calmly and reliably. The hardware ensures that programs are loaded quickly and the data is available fast. Multitasking runs smoothly, and you can switch back and forth between individual tasks without a problem. The SSD is stable and achieves values of 1522 MB/s writing and 1191 MB/s reading in the AS SSD benchmark. No other model achieves these values in a database with similar hardware. In addition, the IdeaPad S340-15 performs well in the individual benchmarks in graphics. The IdeaPad S340-15 features a dedicated graphics card, the MX230, which is noticeable in all graphics-heavy applications.

The IdeaPad S340-15 features a 3.5 mm jack, USB-C port, an HDMI port, and two USB-A ports. There are also a couple of status LEDs. Unfortunately, it is missing one helpful one: a USB-C port with Display Port support instead of the USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C would have been better. And, of course, that would significantly expand the connection options. However, you are still prepared for most typical uses with the available connections.

Overall, this laptop passes the majority of the port department’s requirements. A Thunderbolt 3 port would’ve been wonderful, but they are typically not found in laptops at this price point. A welcome improvement over the standard microSD card slot is the 4-in-1 memory card reader, and the USB-C enables the connection of a reasonably fast external storage drive.

For the IdeaPad S340-15, Lenovo provides two processor choices: the AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 3500U and the Intel Core i7-10510U. The IdeaPad S340-15 has enough processing power with these CPUs to tackle everyday computing activities, even demanding ones. As a result, the laptop runs easily, including web browsing, document processing, and email sending.

There are two RAM slots available on the Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15. A maximum of 12 GB RAM can be installed in the two upgradeable RAM slots, each of which can accommodate up to 8 GB of memory soldered to the motherboard. As a result, the RAM performance of the Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15 is better than the average of many laptops, although it is not as good as the Acer Aspire 3.

The battery life is remarkable, and there is no chance it would disrupt your workflow. The IdeaPad S340-15 lasts more than five and a half hours at full brightness. In the database, it places itself in the top group of comparably equipped laptops. However, if you turn down the brightness a bit, you can work all day with the Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15 without plugging it into a power outlet. Compared to its closest competitor, the Dell Latitude E5430, the battery life of the Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15 is significantly better.

Windows 10 Home is preinstalled on this laptop. With its rich gaming capabilities, frequent updates, Microsoft’s virtual assistant Cortana, and an animated and transparent UI, Windows 10 Home provides good features for a home user who wants to use this PC for everyday chores, entertainment, and gaming. Additionally, Windows 10 Home offers consumers excellent security and authentication.

A free version of McAfee anti-virus software also comes with this laptop, and it repeatedly tries to convince you to update to the full version. However, if you want a more robust security system, you can uninstall it quickly and find better alternatives elsewhere. Lenovo Vantage also is installed to keep your system up-to-date. With this app, you can check updates and easily adjust settings for the system behavior as per your preference. For example, the music can pause when a call comes in via Skype, which is very convenient.

Furthermore, the Lenovo app explorer, LinkedIn, and the Lenovo utility app are also preinstalled on the S340-15. To make it simple to customize the PC to your preferences, the Lenovo App Explorer recommends well-known, practical, and useful apps. At the same time, the Lenovo utility offers accessible features, including an on-screen keyboard, Wi-Fi, Dolby Audio, etc.

You won’t hear the Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15 at all in regular use. It works very quietly. Even with demanding programs, the fans only emit a low noise from time to time. It is only marginally louder in the stress test. It also stays pleasantly cool to the touch.

The storage for Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15 can hold as much as 2TB of data after upgrading, which is pretty good for a laptop in this price range. The laptop also comes with a 4-in-1 SD card reader for additional storage. The SD card storage option should be helpful for individuals who require a lot of storage space. In addition, with significantly faster read and write rates than the Acer Aspire 3, the S340-15’s storage transfer rate improves the laptop’s overall speed.

With the IdeaPad S340-15, upgrading is available for the RAM, and storage is surprisingly easy. This model has 4 GB of RAM soldered in, but a maximum of 12 GB of RAM is supported, so you can still install an 8 GB bar here. You can also swap out Western Digital’s M.2 SSD directly, but you should make sure that the new SSD has a suitable format. An M.2-2242 is installed here too, and there is a complimentary 2.5″ slot in which you can install a good HDD or SSD. If the battery becomes weak, you can replace it because it is not glued, only screwed.

Undoubtedly, the Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15 is one of the most affordable laptops on the market. It has a Core i7-1065G7, the newest model from Intel. This is the same processor found in considerably more expensive competitors like the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 or the Razer Blade Stealth, which easily cost twice as much as our Lenovo. The S340-15 is an excellent option at its price point, although its overall performance isn’t as good as that of these pricier laptops.

The Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15 is stable, excellent in design, and fast. Also, the battery life is refreshingly convenient. Plus, there is also nothing to complain about in terms of artistry. The weight and dimensions are also optimum for a laptop of this size. The main drawback is only the display, which offers little contrast and could be brighter. Further, with its limitations, the Lenovo laptop is not a good gaming laptop.

In the end, the Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15 is a great budget laptop with high working speed and excellent features for day-to-day use. Compared to Dell XPS, HP Pavilion, or Dell Inspiron, Lenovo hit the spot with the S340-15. You receive an awesome collection of ports, a nice keyboard, an excellent look, and a long battery life. In addition, you can upgrade it with another 2.5-inch SSD or hard drive. If you’re looking for a good budget laptop with these features, then the Lenovo IdeaPad S340-15 is a perfect choice.
